You can use them in any genre - blues, rock and country have all seen their share of tenor guitar players. It’s sometimes used as a crossover instrument for mandolin players looking to get into the guitar, and often appreciated in its own right for its unique sound. However, the tenor guitar’s popularity has seen a resurgence in the last decade. For a long time they were heard primarily in Celtic folk music, where the open tunings were a natural fit for playing reels and jigs. Tenor guitars gradually faded into obscurity as electric guitars came to prominence and the number of tenor banjo players diminished. Instrument manufacturers tried a few things, such as putting wooden heads on banjos, before players coalesced around the idea of putting a banjo neck on a guitar body. However, banjo players also wanted to create less harsh sounds with more sustain. They were the loudest stringed instruments around, so they were used in the rhythm sections of early jazz bands to provide chords that could be heard over the horns and to play the occasional solo. It may be hard to believe now, but the tenor banjo was the most popular stringed instrument in the US between World War I and the early 1930s. ![]() The tenor guitar evolved out of the tenor banjo rather than the guitar. During the 1920s, manufacturing boomed as hundreds of local and national firms established plants in the county, including Ford, Goodrich, Firestone, U.S. The combination of its film, agricultural, and manufacturing industries made Los Angeles County a prime location for the small farms movement. In addition, subsistence homesteads served as symbols of the limitations of New Deal and progressive thought, and the racialized land and housing policies that would undermine the homeownership dreams of minority laborers in California and the nation for decades afterward. Yet, while the two projects would offer struggling Depression-era families a chance at the combination of rural and urban lifestyles-what Gast called "rurban" living-they would remain exclusively white and in many ways demonstrate the racial impulses that had long fueled the small farms movement. With $25 million dedicated to the experimental, federally supervised "small farms program" known as "Subsistence Homesteads," Gast would oversee both the 40-unit San Fernando Valley and 100-unit El Monte homesteads: planning them, building them, and selecting 140 families from a pool of thousands of hopefuls to live on them. Wilson and organized within the Department of the Interior, DSH leaders looked to Southern California for model sites. Therefore, when New Dealers created the Department of Subsistence Homesteads (DSH) led by M.L. Advertisements "extolling the virtues" of small farm living appeared regularly in local newspapers, notes historian Robert M. At least six hundred El Monte families already cultivated their own fruits and vegetables on small farm plots. A 1934 Los Angeles Times article estimated that 3,000 newcomers had settled on small acreage plots in the growing town prior to 1933. As an El Monte resident, Gast had witnessed the fruits of his promotional work close at hand. San Gabriel and San Fernando Valleys had also experienced a boom in the numbers of white settlers looking to live out the "small farms" existence. This bulletin deals chiefly with the economic problems that will be met by those people who are planning to combine part-time farming and wage earning, 1934 | Photo courtesy of US Library of Congress As a federal official would tell the public in 1934, the hope was for the small farm movement to "develop a better standard of living and increase the security of families by eliminating their complete dependence on a paycheck." In suburbs like South Gate, working and middle class homeowners built their own bungalows and planted their own gardens as much out of economic necessity as any pretense to lifestyle or any hope of improving financial portfolios. Wage laborers, clerks, and even underpaid professionals by day, residents augmented their income with small acreage food cultivation. For many working class homeowners in and around Los Angeles, the home held value productively rather than speculatively. Through Gast and others, the Los Angeles Times had spent much of the 1920s promoting the "small farm movement." By 1933, the newspaper claimed that 5,000 households in the county engaged in the practice, with more than 2,000 joining the ranks in that year alone. "The way I see it, the small farm home is not just a piece of property but a mode of living, one that is being adopted generally in Southern California," he noted. "It is a good home in good and bad times and a place to save earnings with an incidental production of food supply." The writer-an editor at the Los Angeles Times' Farm and Garden Magazine and El Monte resident-had long advocated for the "small farm lifestyle," a return-to-the-land movement that stretched back to the turn of the century. Gast told an audience of San Diegans in 1933. and the small farms home gives them that opportunity," Ross H. It's like launching a second instance of the said app. Split View can also be made from within the Task Switcher by dragging one app over another.Īnd while we are on it, there is also a new option called Center Window - you can open an email or a note in a separate, more focused window without leaving the app itself. It's a bit confusing at first, but give it some time, and you'll get it. You can also use Split Screen - just tap on the three dots on any full-screen app - be it in slide over mode or not, larger Snap Left/Right icon. 'Slide over' opened apps appear in the Task Switcher next to the full-screen ones. This is called 'Slide over' as it is a sliding app. The Dock is an all-powerful tool for multi-tasking - when you are working with an app in full-screen, you can summon the dock and drag and drop an icon to open in floating window, which you can snap left or right. You can also allow App Library shortcut on the Dock, too. You can opt for 'Suggested and Recent apps' in the Dock, where you can see the last few apps you've used. The Dock is always visible across the homescreens, and it can accommodate up to 12 app shortcuts for quick access. You can also swipe on the line left or right to switch to your recently used apps instantaneously. Then you can swipe and stop midway for task switcher, swipe from the side of the screen for back and forward. Swipe quickly upwards from the bottom line to close an app or swipe slowly to pull up the Dock for multi-tasking. The navigation gestures stay the same as they were on the iPhone X, though on the iPadOS you also have a dock gesture. Tap and hold works as quick actions on various apps throughout the homescreens and the Dock. The Control Center, which has customizable and (some) expandable toggles, is called with a swipe from the right part of the status bar. The Notification Center is summoned with a swipe from the left part of the top status bar. The old widgets come right after the new ones, should you choose to use some new ones, of course. Here you can also use the old third-party widgets that haven't been optimized yet for newer iOS versions. ![]() You put the same widgets and stacks you can on your homescreen(s). Apps are added automatically to the App Library upon installation. ![]() The App Library is an app drawer, which is always your rightmost homescreen pane. You can't opt-out of Today and App Library, though. You can hide specific homescreens dynamically - you may have a page that's full of games and hide when at work or hide a page of work/school apps when on vacation. There are two specific screens - the leftmost is the Today page, while the rightmost page - App Library. Your apps usually populate the homescreen(s) with apps and various size widgets (single or stacked). Sure, quick search works, you can see some notifications and widgets, even take a picture, but you are still locked from the core OS functions. If secure unlock is enabled, you won't be able to pass the lockscreen no matter what features you've enabled on it. The TouchID sensor is now placed on the Lock key, and it is incredibly fast and with superb accuracy. It's cool you can decide the range of your privacy. ![]() Finally, you can also enable the Control Center - it's summoned with a swipe down from around the top left part of the screen. Swipe right, and Today page shows up, swipe left, and you are in Camera. For example, if you swipe up, you will bring the Notification Center, while a swipe down shows the Spotlight search and quick shortcuts. Yet, it can be powerful if you give Lockscreen access to some or all features it supports. The lockscreen on the iPad mini is as simple as possible - it shows the time and the date. The iPadOS interface is still based on homescreens populated with apps and widgets, App Library for your less important apps, and Notification and Control Centers. So yes, a new OS name was due, and iPadOS is a fitting one. The iPads now offer more sophisticated multi-tasking, USB-C accessories compatibility, desktop-oriented Safari, Sidecar option and expanded mouse, keyboard, trackpad and Apple Pencil support. Apple renamed iOS for iPad back in 2019 as it has become much more powerful, a symbolic gesture but a necessary one for sure. The blade is double-coated nylon for durability but is somewhat flatter than many other tape measures, which reduced standout in our tests to around 9 feet. The blade itself is white on one side and yellow on the other, which gives you options when using the tape measure in a spot with dim light that makes it a little harder to read the measurements. The measurements are in black on both sides of the blade. Still, for the price point, this is a fine tape measure that is sturdily constructed. It also has a somewhat aggressive recoil, meaning that if you don't take care, you might get nicked by the retracting blade. We found the 25-foot Komelon Contractor LR to be very accurate, although it lost some points for having an awkwardly placed blade lock that required our tester to reposition his hand to use. There's no need to break your budget for a tape measure if you just need a basic tool for taking measurements around the house. Price at time of publish: $22 for 16-foot $28 for 25-footĭimensions: Not specified | Blade Width: 1-1/4-inch | Weight: 1.2 pounds | Autolock: No | Magnetic Hook: No Overall, we found this to be a very accurate, durable, and useful tape measure for professionals, DIYers, and around-the-house users alike. The belt clip easily attaches to a belt or strap, but this measuring tape is a bit bulky for the designated tape measure holder on some tool pouches. The dual-sided hook helps keep the blade in place when measuring without an assistant. The 16-foot model, however, had an acceptable standout of around 12 feet. The 25-foot model tested at around 13 feet, not the 17 feet claimed by the manufacturer. The one downside we found was the standout of this tape measure-that's the distance the blade of a tape measure can stand out straight without support before bending towards the ground-wasn't quite as good as some others in our tests. And both sides of the blades have the full range of measurements, so it's easy to use the tape measure even over your head or in tight or awkward spots. Standard stud and joist spacings are marked as well. The measurement indicators are large and easy to read, with lines sized appropriately to make it easy at a glance to tell if you are looking at 1/16-inch, 1/8-inch, 1/4-inch, or 1/2-inch markings. The 1-1/4-inch-wide blade is coated for durability, with the first 6 inches double-coated to prevent fraying, bending, or cracking. An additional feature we loved was a "finger brake" opening at the bottom of the tape measure that lets the user control the speed of the blade as it retracts-no more abrupt motions that can cut your finger or knock the tool out of your hand. ![]() The tape measure has a sliding lock to hold the blade extended when in use, and we found it very easy to slide with just one thumb. Although a bit on the large side, we found that both the 16-foot and 25-foot models were easy to hold and felt comfortable in our hands.
